Plants In A Box is an online retailer who grows its own flora in the lush Currumbin Valley and couriers cheerful little plants straight into the backyards of keen gardeners all around Australia.

The founders presented us with an open book to create a brand that was unique & distinctive, coupled with a desire to dial up personality and move away from the traditional character of horticulture. Covering a breadth of creative territory from brand, packaging and digital made this a super fun project to work on.

A new brand for
an old industry

From the outset, we were tasked with creating a brand that navigated away from traditional boundaries and toward a contemporary story that resonated with first time or not-so-confident backyard dwellers.

Leveraging a blend of friendly copy, distinctive colours and a brand mark that is easily identifiable, we developed a comprehensive kit of parts that could be rolled out across both print and digital.

Boxing on

Un-boxing has emerged from an afterthought into a proper marketing discipline. Both teams saw the opportunity to invest in design and packaging as a way to build the brand story, delight customers along the way and inject personality into the delivery process.

Our considerations during the proof of concept phases included the sturdiness of the box, its ability to handle a variety of plant sizes, and to keep plants safe & sound during transit so that the little babies arrive in premo condition. The final result was a spiffy delivery carton designed for customer love.

Nature for sale

With Brand, Messaging and Packaging locked down, it was time to turn our attention to the business of online commerce. Plants In A Box is a pure-play online retailer who drives 100% of turnover through its online store, so getting the site humming was high on the priority list.

Our project commenced with a deep dive into purchasing patterns, on-site behaviour and heat maps to understand the big picture. With analytics at hand we scurried off to our design cave to start shaping the new digital vision.

The new site features a more engaging home page, encourages users to shop collections and the latest looks rather than individual plants, and shares plenty of home and garden inspo via the Instagram feed.

The results? Traffic up 233% and sales up 185% on comparable periods.

Growing a business

Building a brand from scratch is not an easy task. Hat tip to the team at Plants In A Box who have worked tirelessly to serve their community of customers and build trust with its loyal base of plant nerds.

The rewards are starting to appear for founders Deb & Elle, with over 7,000 Instagram followers, features in The Weekend Edition, Cirrum, Slow Living, and home styling powerhouse Inside Out magazine.
